How a well-considered coffee shop design can elevate an entire business.
We recently completed an interior design concept for the eclectic and delightful, Coffeeberry coffee shop.
Coffeeberry is a café in the Cascades Mall, Pietermaritzburg with a New York loft-industrial design aesthetic. Their story started in 2005 as a small eatery with unforgettable coffee. Famed for their friendly vibes and their great menu, Coffeeberry grew into one of the most popular social and work venues in the area.
With their brand growing and customer base expanding, they needed to upgrade their interiors. A more contemporary look would set the stage for a laid-back and enjoyable coffee shop experience. It would accommodate a wider range of clients which further encourages the growth of their daily foot traffic through the door.
Good coffee is great. Good coffee shop design to go with it is next level.
Coffeeberry’s owner, Con Malherbe, approached novospace with his intentions of upgrading the interior design of his store. This decision came at a time when the landlord was relocating Coffeeberry to a new position in the mall.
New premises bring a great opportunity for a total revamp, which Mr. Malherbe was ready to embrace. Working with a new build is always a pleasure, as it means the shell of the building is available to us without the obstacle of renovating a store while still attempting to trade. Coffeeberry was still operating from the existing site while we began installation in the new space. This meant zero disruptions to Coffeeberry’s daily trade.
After consulting with the client and inspecting the premises, we proposed a concept which was within the allocated budget. To convey the look and feel we had in mind, we provided the client with our proposed space plan, suggested finishes and 3D visuals of the end product.
The bold new design we suggested had the client feeling hesitant prior to installation. However, once the installation started, we received weekly calls, telling us how incredible the space was looking and how he could start to see the concept taking shape.
Interior design work sometimes encompasses a degree of pushing clients to venture outside of their comfort zones and into new territory. Placing his trust in our well-practised hands paid off handsomely in the end. The client was glad he did not “water down” the design and was ecstatic with the results.
The highlights of the installation
The new shop offered an exciting structure to work with. Considering the trends of the industry, novospace envisioned something bold, dramatic, and more contemporary than what they had in the existing store. We envisioned raw exposed brick and timber cladding to go with the exposed services and polished flooring.
The increased head heights give a distinct atmosphere which we were keen to work with and further enhance. The shop also came complete with cementitious flooring, a smooth surface that offers an authentic industrial feel to go with the other exposed and raw materials.
We upcycled existing furniture to fit in with the industrial aesthetic as well as keeping costs down. Purchasing new furniture is expensive and not always necessary.
We opted for darker colours on the walls, one being a statement-making black. While there is a common idea that black creates the illusion of a smaller space, the truth is that it is a colour that recedes therefor creating a sense of a larger space.
The black walls and black ceiling create a seamless look. For this reason, the black paint, along with the exposed brick wall, enhanced functionality as the space appeared more intimate and cosy, while it created the illusion that the area is larger than it actually is.
Coffeeberry’s trade has continued to increase with the new coffee shop design
The area we had to work in was tight, as were our deadlines. We created a coffee shop setting that’s inviting, friendly, and contemporary.
Coffeeberry is now a space that the client is very proud of. His clientele have responded positively to the project, with many locals adopting the coffee shop as a social venue and an informal daily workspace. This enthusiasm has made a positive impact on Coffeeberry’s profit margins. Coffeeberry is enjoying a boom in their business thanks to more foot traffic and increased sales.
Since their upgrade, Coffeeberry has been nominated for café of the year in South Africa by Coffee Magazine, alongside some big names. Coffee Magazine describes this award:
“This award goes to the establishment that has consistently created an amazing café experience for its patrons, serves great coffee and food, with excellent service, has great ambience, design and most importantly, a loyal community of patrons.”
We are thrilled for Coffeeberry and eagerly await the outcome of the nominations.
